Break the Cycle

There was a man who started his life in a modest way, but had big hopes for his future. He graduated from school with his degree in Electrical Engineering and went to work for one of the large defense contractors at the time. He got married and started a family. He changed job positions to a smaller defense firm, completed graduate school, and began rising through the ranks of the company. He seemed to have everything going for him, but his life felt empty. He felt a void that he couldn't seem to fill with things, career, and accomplishments. Like all of us, he had strengths and weakness in his life. He fought to improve upon his weaknesses, but just couldn't seem to conquer them. He took his family to church fairly regularly, but he didn't seem to connect with what was being said. After he and his wife went on a retreat with some other couples, he made the decision that the cycle needed to be broken. He came to understand that the void in his life and the inability to overcome his weaknesses were the result of sin in his life. He also came to understand that the God of the universe had made a provision for this sin through the death of His son, Jesus Christ (Romans 6:23). He read the verse in Psalm 95:7-8 and Hebrews 3:7 that read "today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts…" He wasn't sure if he understood everything completely, but he knew he had to make a change, so he took the leap of faith and accepted Jesus Christ into his life. God broke the cycle of sin in his life.
